DIY Cola

Around the time I started to get interested in anarchism, I developed an “admiring from afar” attraction to the DIY scene.  Anyways, I took a step closer to it today by trying to make my own Cola.  Before I continue, let me just say that my expirament was a total failure.  I couldn’t find some of the oils or the gum acerbic that the recipe called for.  I didn’t have a container big enough for the two liters the recipe called for.  And I think I used too much sugar.  Anyways, what I was left with was sugar water that settled really quickly.  I mixed the concentrate with sugar and Club Soda.  I imagine this will go flat pretty quickly.  I did come up with one glass of stuff that tasted reasonably like Cola, and I did find a restaurant supply store in the Strip that should have some gum and possibly the oils I need too.  So next time, I’ll probably have some more success.

Not only was it gratifying to make something myself (even if I wasn’t totally successful, like when I tried to do limeaid), not only is the end result cheaper, healthier and better tasting, but when you move closer to the source, up the supply chain, you break yourself a tiny bit free-er of capitalism’s hold on you.  I have a bad habit with soda.  I drink to much of it.  If I could start to make my own, I could distance myself from consumerism.

And that’s rewarding in and of itself.
